Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is incredible for kids

As student learn and master traditional Brazilian Jiu Jitsu techniques, working toward and earning their next belt, they learn the positive power of goal setting, discipline and achievement.

They also learn self defense, and develop a real sense of inner strength, confidence and self esteem.

The art and techniques of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu teach patience, control and the ability to adapt and find solutions to situations in life. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a holistic approach to life that also teaches the importance of having good values as a person. These are all skills and qualities that, when developed in children, will carry them successfully through life.

Children aged 5 – 15 years old must wear white traditional Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Gi (uniform) to classes. These can be purchased from our gym or you are welcome to source your own. For No Gi, ranked rash guard and mid-thigh length fight shorts.

How do I change my child's training day?

If you wish to change your childs training day you will need to contact the admin to see if this is possible.

What uniform does my child need to wear?

Students are expected to wear a uniform for class, we stipulate both Gi & No Gi uniform

*New students are NOT required to have the correct uniform for the first few classes. You can wear sports clothing if you do not have specific BJJ or grappling gear.

 Gi Training

  • We recommend a white Gi for all children
  • Gis must be clean, well-fitted, and worn with the ranked correct belt

No-Gi Training

  • Ranked rash guard required
  • Fight-style shorts only (no pockets or zips)
  • No under-the-buttocks shorts or tights
  • If wearing leggings, shorts must be worn over the top
  • No cropped tops

Uniform rules are in place for safety, hygiene, and consistency and apply at all times.

Whilst attending  class at Mount Maunganui Jiu Jitsu your child’s uniform will display/show NO patches from other clubs.

What happens if my child's class falls on a public holiday?

If you child’s class falls on a public holiday we ask you that you bring your child to a make-up class on another weekday. Please contact the admin prior so the coaches can be informed an extra child will be attending the class.

When will my child receive their belt or stripe?

Stripes and belts are awarded when a child is ready, not on a fixed timeline.

Children may be considered for stripes during classes. Stripes recognise progress in skill development, behaviour, understanding, effort, and consistency.

After receiving four stripes, a child may be considered for a belt promotion when they meet the required technical and behavioural standards. Some children may progress faster and be promoted earlier if they train consistently or compete, while others may take longer — both are completely normal.

Every child progresses at their own pace, and all grading decisions are guided by MMJJ coaches to ensure promotions are fair, meaningful, and supportive of long-term development.

When is the children's grading?

Grading is carried out twice a year, mid-year and at the end of the year. Belt stripes are given out during the classes and at the end of a term.

In the summer season when we train in No-Gi (shorts and ranked rash guard), your child needs to wear their belt as well so we can give out stripes during class times.

Children who do not yet have a gi and belt will still be acknowledged but receive their stripe once they have purchased a gi and belt. There is no grading for children who only participate in no-gi classes.
